in case anyone is interested, i wrote an artist statement for my season series :)
The series is my interpretation of the four seasons almost in the sense of spirits of the seasons. The Elephant is spring because spring is a warm, it is welcoming, it is a time of new life and relaxation. The elephant in the series is an asian elephant native to southeast asia where it is almost a perpetual spring. The owl represents Fall, it is a cooling, like the cool of the evening, when owls begin their hunt, owls fly and fight against the forces that would otherwise make them fall. The Antelope is summer, a dry time of year, hot and dangerous, most antelope are native to the continent of Africa where parts are in a near constant state of summer. The Bear is winter, winter is cold and harsh, dark and seemingly endless, but it has a softer side, there is beauty in ice, and warmth in someone’s heart as winter brings in time to spend with loved ones, Bears hibernate through winter but they also give birth, they are tough animals but tend to avoid conflict instead of seek it out. They each have touches of aztec gold glaze, these are their sources of power, their center, the elephant holds a sprout in it’s trunk, the owl has halo of light, the antelope has it’s horns, the bear it’s claws.
