This incredibly awesome Octopus Cake was made by Karen Portaleo at the Highland Bakery in Atlanta, Georgia. It weighed in at an impressive 200 beautiful, be-tentacled pounds. And we sorely wish we could have sampled a slice.

Pacific giant octopus has just mated for the first time. And now she’s searching for a safe refuge. A hundred thousand eggs hang from its ceiling and she’s guarding them with her life. She cares for them for six months, and during all this time she doesn’t eat a thing. And now, as they are hatching, she is dying.

Blue Ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.) in action!
I wouldn’t normally post footage of an octopus in an aquarium, but this is really great footage of a Blue Ring catching prey. The specimen was caught by the videographer off the coast of Taiwan.
